Fall Comdex '98 Wrap-up

Here's our online cliff notes on what happened at this year's Comdex, and what to watch for in the upcoming year...

BEST OF SHOW

Microsoft Office 2000 beta
This year we disagree with PC Week's Awarding of the "Comdex Best of Show" award to Microsoft SQL Server 7.0.   Actually, they got it partially correct - right company, wrong software.   Acme's 'Best of Show" goes to Microsoft Office 2000, now available for public beta.

BEST DIGITAL CAMERA
It's a tie!  Sony Digital Mavica and Pixera's Picolo
See photos (left).  A lot more people are going to have these by the end of '99.  Prices are coming down and quality is going up.  Buy now!

BEST IMMERGING PRODUCT
Flat panel monitors.
14" and 15" models are now available for less than $800.

BEST FOOD & COMPUTER BOOKS
Piero's Restaurant & New Riders Publishing
New Riders Publishing has some of the best books for advanced computer training.  Piero's has some of the best food in Las Vegas.  In the past, neither place has been cheap. However, New Riders showcased their new line of "Fast Tracks" computer books this year at Piero's (across from the convention center). Normally their books are at least $50 per title and primarily available in hard cover.  Their recently released "Fast Track" books available in paperback are more condensed and less expensive - most under $20 each.

BEST AD SPECIALTY
Microsoft Bob T-shirts
You've got to hand it to Microsoft, their "Microsoft Bob" software never took off, but their leftover inventory of the MS Bob merchandise made for cheap, but very coveted collectibles.

BEST PARTY
Microsoft Geek Fest
Held at Quarks Bar & Restaurant in the Las Vegas Hilton, this was the only place you could get a "BOB" shirt, boogie 'til 1am with other geeks and drink Romulan ale (beer with green food coloring).

BEST HOTEL / CASINO
The Stardust
Oh so close to the convention center (4 blks), on the Las Vegas strip, recently remodeled and room rates under $200 a night.  That's a hard deal to beat during Comdex.

It's back.
Like a bad habit.   Welcome to Acme's 3rd consecutive Comdex Web Site.  We'll be enjoying a week in sin city checking out the finest computer and Internet wares the industry has to offer.

Our goal is to come back to work at Acme with our suitcases full of new server software (including the FrontPage 2000 beta) and assorted other computer loot.

What's on the agenda for this year's Comdex?  Database solutions, the aforementioned FrontPage 2000 and Office 2000 previews, new web server tools and add-ons, the Microsoft Pavilion, checking out the coolest new web graphics software, Bill Gates keynote address and searching for Elvis.
