It's back. Like a bad habit.
Welcome to Acme's 5th consecutive Comdex Web Site. We'll be spending a few days with
250,000 other propeller heads and posting our online cliff notes on
what happened at Comdex (the
computer industry's largest trade show). Save yourself a plane ticket and a hangover and check out our Comdex
recap.
Project 2000 Beta Launched
Microsoft launched the beta of Microsoft Project 2000.
Microsoft President Steve Ballmer gave a very convincing presentation,
then proceeded to fall asleep during the product demo. Doh!

Bill Gates keynote
A somewhat boring and uneventful
replay of technology showcased last month at ISPCon (the Internet
Service Provider Convention). I sat two seats away from Hugh
Downs (20/20 fame). Hugh fell asleep during the Windows
DataCenter 2000 demonstration. Falling
asleep was a common theme, I guess. I had seen the demo before, but it was
impressive nonetheless.
Highlights of the keynote
Bill Gates started his keynote by asking if anyone had heard any
good lawyer jokes lately. The audience responded with a roar of
laughter. Further showing that he has a sense of humor, Gates
ran a four minute video parody of recent events. One sketch
featured Microsoft President Steve Ballmer dressed up as Dr. Evil from
the Austin Powers movie. Gates donned an Austin Powers wig, suit
and teeth. Turning to the camera he quipped "I put the
sin in syntax - baby!" What a geek.
Other highlights: About five minutes into the presentation
a commotion arose near one of the side doors about 30 feet from the
podium. After about 5-10 seconds of loud shouting security
officers removed persons unknown - most likely a protester or
disgruntled Linux user.

Annoying Comdex buzzwords
1. Convergence
2. "___" Device
3. "___" Appliance
Everything this year
was either some sort of device or appliance. What the heck
happened to good old fashioned computers? |
